Should I Be Taking Medication for my BPD?

Sadly there is no dedicated medication you can take for BPD, but there are various forms of medication for the many symptoms relating to the disorder. There are so many other factors that need to be taken into account when asking this question, like ‘Are you suffering to the point you find things intolerable?’ And ‘if so, what feelings are getting you down? Is it depression, anxiety or something else?‘ As you can see, there are many unknowns.

Most People Won’t Need/Take Medication For BPD

While BPD has the highest rate of suicide of all the personality disorders it is also the one in which the smallest number of people take medication and that is down to the wide variety of symptoms you have with BPD. Sure, some of us get depressed or lose control of ourself and in those instances, we often need medication to help us get over the hump (or so to speak). But medication is always used as a last resort by any health care professional. They will try all other methods before putting you onto a potentially addictive mood-stabiliser and then there is the risk that you might overdose on the medication anyway.

Medication is Not Always The Answer

Sadly when it comes to the many different symptoms of BPD, therapy is the better option over medication any day. Sure, there will be times when both will be needed to help you get over the lows often associated with BPD, but never as the first line of defence against it. It is always well and good reading this page for some advice, but in truth, the only person who knows the real answer to the question is your doctor or mental health professional. Only they will know if it is right for you to go onto some sort of medication and no-one else should be telling you to do so.

Just make sure you reach out there if you feel you do need some sort of medication and never suffer in silence. Tell your doctor you think you might need some form of medication and why that is so. Sure medication should always be a last resort, but it should always be kept open as an option if you need it.
